My Own Back II

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The back of my jacket was completely rotted through and it had to be replaced and also there was a small circular hole in one sleeve. I can guess what happened – and it isn’t very nice – but I have no idea who did it or why (which, I suppose, was one of the reasons for attacking me in that way).

My Own Back I

Friday, September 28th, 2007

In the counselling staff meeting at lunchtime I did all the talking. At the supper party in the evening, Meg and I did all the listening.

Prodigal

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Despite harassing me and abusing me for several months because I defended a member of my staff against his attacks, he has asked if he can come back to get some more help from us. Of course he can. I don’t hold grudges over addicts doing what addicts do.

Remarkable

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Meg’s piano teacher has been completely cured of her cancer by radiotherapy. That’s excellent news for both of them.

Corrections

Friday, September 28th, 2007

I’ve written a book and it’s all typed out. However, in terms of time, I know that I am only half way through, even though there is only one more thing to do.

A Disastrous Chancellor

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Gordon Brown’s tax credit system for children has come unstuck in a big way. £500m has been overpaid and, for legal reasons, cannot be reclaimed. If ever there was a bad idea badly implemented that was it. Yet – in some circles – Gordon Brown still has a reputation for having been an excellent chancellor. I’ll bet that the people who received his largesse think exactly that. Those of us who provided it through our taxes are not so impressed.

The Oscar

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Forest Whitaker deserved the Oscar that he won for best actor in the role of Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland”. His emotional repertoire was immense, totally captivating in every sense.

The School

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

It was bleak even on a fine day when I went there to give a talk on addiction. There was no love in the place. It was like my own school – we used to play this school at various sports – and it gave me the creeps.

Not For Me

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

The president of The Royal College of General Practitioners is to address the Independent Doctors Forum. I have no interest in hearing him. The RCGP was created by private doctors but has sold out to the NHS. It sees the state as its friend rather than its enemy.

Suicide

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

“I’ve got to go home to be with my son who has paranoid schizophrenia. He might commit suicide.”

Well, I suppose he might – but my concern is that she won’t be able to stay drug-free in that environment. It’s her own potential suicide – one way or another – that worries me.
